Marc van Heerden, 36, Retires From Football

Former AmaZulu FC player, Marc van Heerden, is hanging up his football boots.

In a statement released via Twitter/X on Sunday, 11 August, the 36-year-old left-back revealed that he was retiring from “the game that has given me everything.”

“Off-season, pre-seasons, moments of glory, times of pain. The beautiful game made me who I am,” he said in the statement. “Words won’t be enough, but from the deapth [sic] of my being, thank you to everyone who’s been there.”

At the age of 20, Van Heerden began his career at AmaZulu, for whom he played between 2008 and 2016. For the next eight years, he played for the likes of Orlando Pirates, Chippa United and Cape Town City, including another brief stint with AmaZulu from 2018 to 2019.

Thanking his family, as well as “the fans who cheered [and] all the clubs I played for”, Van Heerden announced that he is moving into a coaching career.

“I came into this game as a boy and leave [sic] as a man. Twenty years on and I start my coaching journey … This is the end of this chapter and the beginning of a new. Thank you to the beautiful game.”
